Your data is your greatest business asset – you need to protect it!
Privacy Awareness Week takes place across Australia on 13-19 May 2018. This government-led initiative raises awareness about the importance of data privacy, educating businesses of their responsibilities and obligations.
Throughout Privacy Awareness Week, businesses will be encouraged to review and improve how they handle personal data.
The cost of a data breach to a business is high – most businesses that suffer a major breach never recover. By putting policies and procedures in place, businesses can avoid the huge financial cost and reputation damage that comes with a data breach. Secure your data, and build trust and confidence with your customers and stakeholders.
There will also be plenty of useful information available for your business on the Australian Government Privacy Awareness Week website
2018 is a milestone year for data privacy in Australia, with two major pieces of new legislation that all businesses must adhere to:
- The Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme came into force in February 2018 – businesses must now notify individuals affected by data breaches that are likely to result in serious harm.
- Any Australian business operating in Europe must adhere to the new European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, which came into effect 25 May 2018 – see the Australian Government’s advice on this legislation
Privacy Awareness Week is an annual initiative by the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities, and is held in many countries across the region.
